Kill Romney–The Obama Campaign Strategy

The time was August, one week short of one year ago. The writers were Ben Smith and Jonathan of Politico. The title of their piece was “Obama plan: Destroy Romney.” They wrote:

Barack Obama’s aides and advisers are preparing to center the president’s reelection campaign on a ferocious personal assault on Mitt Romney’s character and business background, a strategy grounded in the early-stage expectation that the former Massachusetts governor is the likely GOP nominee.

Fast forward to today, and we can see the strategy unfolding at light speed. Just yesterday, Mitt’s fellow Mormon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), in need of a sympathetic ear for the tale he was about to tell, called writers from the Huffington Post to his office on Capitol Hill to provide “what he says is an informed explanation for why Mitt Romney refuses to release additional tax returns.” Why would he choose this particular publication? Who else would put out a totally unsubstantiated rumor that Harry Reid himself admitted in the interviewers might not be true?

The whole piece is worth reading, if for nothing else than to get a sense of how the Democrats and this portion of the media are interacting to carry out the Democrats’ 2012 Presidential Campaign Strategy. To cut to the chase, here is the core of Reid’s assertion:

Saying he had “no problem with somebody being really, really wealthy,” Reid sat up in his chair a bit before stirring the pot further. A month or so ago, he said, a person who had invested with Bain Capital called his office.

“Harry, he didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years,” Reid recounted the person as saying.

“He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” said Reid. “But obviously he can’t release those tax returns. How would it look?

As Allahpundit writes at HotAir.com, “Mitt Romney, who’s been running for political office for 20 years now, decided he’d gamble those prospects and risk time in a federal pen for tax evasion in order to save a few million dollars that he doesn’t need.” As Allahpundit’s sarcasm suggests, such an approach is highly unlikely. Furthermore, it is unlikely that President Obama’s IRS would stand idly by while a tax cheat wins the Republican nomination.

All of this would explain why Senator Reid would call in Huffington Post rather than the more conventional media. Perhaps the mainstream media still has some level of journalistic ethics left that would prevent running with such an unsubstantiated rumor? Recent evidence, which we will explore later, suggests otherwise.

This story is that it clearly represents an unfolding of the “Kill Romney” campaign strategy that was revealed in the Politico story I cited at the top of this post. The Democrats have no significant successes they wish to tout: The economy is a shambles, allies are despondent while enemies rejoice, and even the euphemistically named “Affordable Care Act for America,” better known as ObamaCare, has polls showing that 55% of Americans favor repeal with only 39% opposing.

At this point, President Obama’s most noteworthy endorsements come from the likes of Socialist dictator Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and nutcase Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Meanwhile, Mitt enjoyed the support of famed Polish reformer, Lech Wałęsa, who as leader of the Solidarity movement in Poland helped bring down the Soviet Union and later served as president of his country. As an aside, Wałęsa refused to meet with President Obama last year, because, as Investor’s Business Daily writes, “Walesa knows a thing or too [sic] about resisting and defeating collectivist tyranny, and he has no tolerance for those such as President Obama who appease and apologize to it.”

So, the bottom line is that “Kill Mitt” is the only weapon in the Democrat arsenal. It is up to clear-thinking Americans to not buy into the warped narrative that it will take to sell the underlying message of President Obama’s campaign.
